The Automobile Association (AA) is encouraged by early indications of a significant shift in road user behaviour during the 2025 Easter travel period. Preliminary data points to a notable reduction in both collisions and fatalities, despite traffic volumes reaching their highest levels in five years. On Thursday afternoon, 17 April, traffic peaked at 2,047 vehicles per hour through the N1 toll gates.
Encouragingly, the N1 corridor—long regarded as one of the country’s most hazardous routes—recorded no major crashes during this time. This marks a promising step forward in the ongoing national effort to enhance road safety.
While final figures are still pending, the AA believes there is already sufficient evidence to commend South African road users for contributing to what appears to be a reversal of a worrying trend.
As travellers return home, the AA looks forward to hearing more stories from those who #GotHomeSafe and hopes this renewed sense of responsibility continues to drive down the historically high rates of holiday road fatalities.
