AA commentary on various road and traffic issues

The marked decrease in the number of road deaths on the country’s roads over easter is to be welcomed but must be seen in the context of decreased traffic volumes on the country’s roads over easter. During a briefing this morning, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced that 162 people died on the country’s roads in 134 fatal crashes.

Blue Light Brigades a road safety threat in SA

Presidential Protection Unit convoys transporting politicians on the country’s roads – especially on major highways – continue to pose a road safety threat for all motorists, and their operation should be reviewed. The Automobile Association (AA) says it will communicate with the Ministers of Police and Transport to have such a review of the so-called Blue Light Brigades instituted urgently.

Levy cuts welcome but fuel price shocks still in store for South Africans

The R1.50 reduction on the General Fuel Levy (GFL) announced by the Minister of Finance last week is welcome and will take some pressure off embattled consumers. However, the Automobile Association (AA) says fuel price increases for April announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) this afternoon will still keep fuel prices at record high levels and will add financial pressure on all South Africans.

Crisis looms as driving licence deadline approaches

A crisis is looming in South Africa as the deadline for the renewal of driving licences arrives tomorrow (SUBS:: Thursday, 31 March) but with hundreds of thousands of drivers who have still not applied for their new cards. The Automobile Association (AA) again appeals to the Minister of Transport to reconsider government’s refusal to extend this deadline, and to make provision for a longer renewal period.
