Your South African driving licence card needs to be renewed four weeks before its expiry date. If you renew it after the expiry date, you will have to apply for a temporary driving licence at an additional cost while waiting for your new driving licence to be issued.

To apply for your new licence, you need to go to your nearest DLTC (Driving licence Testing Centre) with the following documentation:

• Your original identity document (ID) or valid South African passport, as well as a certified copy of same, and your old driving licence card
• Four black-and-white ID photographs (before you have photographs taken confirm with the DLTC how many photos they require)
• Proof of residential address e.g. utility account. If the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit
• If you stay at an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your residential address
• Prescribed application fee

You will undergo eye testing and your fingerprints will be taken. Alternatively, you can have your eyes tested by an optometrist and submit the report at the driving licence testing centre (DLTC). If your sight has worsened from the date on which your licence was issued, new conditions will be attached to your licence.

All Gauteng residents should apply online for the renewal, bookings can be done at online.natis.gov.za, while a separate page also enables customers to download the required application forms.

Gauteng motorists can book for the renewal of a driver’s licence, or apply for a professional driving permit (PDP). Once you have completed your details and advised which type of ID documentation you will be providing, you can proceed to book a day to perform the task of applying for your licence. You can then select a time to book an appointment.

• For driver’s licence renewals, the site notes that drivers need to bring an eye test report from a registered Optometrist or Ophthalmologist on the day of your booking.
• Your new driving licence will be ready in four to six weeks.
• You can contact your local licensing office to find out the cost.

New Ministers must step up government’s service to citizens

The finalisation of the Cabinet of National Unity by President Cyril Ramaphosa has brought certainty to the leadership of key government departments, a move welcomed by the Automobile Association (AA). The Association notes that Ms Barbara Creecy, appointed as the new Minister of Transport, and Mr GwedeMantashe, re-appointed as the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, must now ensure effective leadership with a view to making meaningful inroads into critical areas managed by their...

Positive outlook for most fuel prices for July

The small decrease in the number of fatalities on South African roads between the December 2022 and January 2023 festive period and the 2023/2024 period is commendable and signals a slight improvement in road safety efforts by authorities. However, the Automobile Association (AA) remains concerned that the deaths of 1427 road users during the festive period is still too high, and that more needs to be done to effectively deal with road safety in South Africa. Transport Minister Sindisiwe...
